Geauga County Historical Society
Event Dates: Each Friday through October 7, 2016
Exhibit: Vintage Summer Fashion

The Geauga County Historical Society reminds the public that its 2016 clothing exhibit titled Vintage Summer Fashions will continue to be open for public viewing every Friday afternoon through October 7, 2016, from noon to 4 P. M., as well as during the Apple Butter Festival on Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9, 2016. The exhibit is displayed in the Society's Law House on the grounds of Century Village Museum in Burton, Ohio. The exhibit will be closed and dismantled after that last noted date.

For the past four years, the Society's Textile Committee has featured portions of its extensive clothing collection in special summer exhibits. Carefully selected and skillfully presented, these articles of apparel have provided exciting snapshots of the fashions of the past. Prior exhibits have included the themes of World War II uniforms, wedding dresses over one hundred years, and evening attire. This year the Society looks at the changing trends in summer fashions. Come and see a fascinating collection of clothing that has been worn in the good old summertime over the decades.

The Friday showings are free of charge. Donations are welcomed for funding future summer exhibits. A catalog is available. Private showings on other days and times may be arranged for a small fee.

For more information, call Century Village Museum at 440-834-1492 during business hours on Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum grounds are located on the southeast edge of the Burton Village Green.

HERE COME THE MUMMIES

Friday, September 30, 2016 at 8:00pm
Here Come the Mummies is an eight-piece funk-rock band of 5000 year-old Egyptian Mummies with a one-track mind. Their "Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave" is sure to get you into them (and possibly vice versa).

Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh's daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-Winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM's mysterious personas, cunning song-craft, and unrelenting live show will bend your brain, and melt your face. Get ready, for Here Come The Mummies.

The process of making apple butter is a time-intensive, age-old, labor of love. Dozens of volunteers, including many of our members and visitors, take part in the peeling and slicing of the apples and the stirring of the copper kettles as the apple slices break down into apple butter. Come and be part of this annual tradition. Start your own fall family memory.

Admission is charged. Adults, $7; ages 6 to 12, $4, ages 5 and under, free.

Demonstrations will include broom making, weaving, rug hooking, kite flying, blacksmithing, woodworking, and pottery making. Activities will children's games, a barrel train, and crafters as well as Amish baked goods and food vendors. A number of fully staged historic buildings will be open for your viewing.

Come to the event and stock up on regular and barbecue apple butter. Available by the jar and by the case. Great with fresh bread, toast, and bagels. Great as holiday gifts. A local product with the proceeds supporting your own Geauga County Historical Society.

For more information, call Century Village Museum at 440-834-1492 during business hours on Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum grounds are located on the southeast edge of the Burton Village Green.

"1776" opens Bellevue Society for the Arts' 2016–17 season

"1776" America's Prize-Winning Musical
October 14, 15, 21 & 22 at 7:30 p.m., October 16 & 23 at 2:30 p.m.
The Hirt Theater at Bellevue Society for the Arts, 205 Maple Street, Bellevue, OH 44811
Just in time for the 2016 Presidential Election, witness the birth of a nation as our forefathers struggle to craft the Declaration of Independence, signed 240 years ago! This seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. "1776" puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation. "1776" is a funny, insightful, and compelling drama with a striking score and legendary book.

Not on My Watch: The Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858

Watch history unfold right before your eyes in a compelling performance of "Not on My Watch: The Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858" presented Sunday, October 16 at 3 p.m. at the House of Zion Fellowship Hall (81 South Locust Street) in Oberlin. Costumed performers from the Kelton House Museum and Garden in Columbus share this original dramatic narrative that tells the story of John Price, a fugitive living in Oberlin, who was captured by federal marshals intending to return him to slavery. The actions of local anti-slavery townspeople and students eventually freed the young man, while the rescuers' defiance of the law and their subsequent imprisonment and trial brought the country to the brink of war. The one-hour presentation is created from accounts drawn from Nat Brandt's book, The Town that Started the Civil War. This free community event is co-hosted by the Oberlin Heritage Center and members of Oberlin's Mt. Zion Baptist Church. All are welcome; doors open at 2:30 p.m.

Kelton House (www.keltonhouse.com), located in the Town Street Historic District of Columbus, Ohio, is historically documented to be a place fugitive slaves could find shelter on their journey to freedom. The museum interprets urban life and the decorative arts in Columbus during the second half of the 19th century, largely through the collection of the Sophia and Fernando Cortez Kelton family. The organization operates as a service of the Junior League of Columbus.

The Oberlin Heritage Center is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is widely recognized as a model small museum, historical society and historic preservation organization. For more information about this program or the Heritage Center's full calendar of tours, history walks, and community programs, please visit www.oberlinheritagecenter.org or call (440) 774-1700.

The Firebird

Friday, February 10, 2017, 8:00 p.m.
Music of storytelling and romance. The Firebird has astonished audiences since its sensational Paris premiere. Its emotional impact stems from lush Russian melodies set against propulsive rhythms and explosive orchestral effects.

How I Learned to Drive
Written by Paula Vogel
March 4-26, 2017 • Allen Theatre

Buckle up. It's going to be a bumpy ride. Li'l Bit takes us on a no holds barred trip back in time to her adolescence in 1960s Maryland and her complicated relationship with an older man. A deeply compassionate look at how we are shaped by the people who hurt us, How I Learned to Drive masterfully veers in and out of personal memory and deftly traverses comedy, drama and farce. CPH Artistic Director Laura Kepley steers Paula Vogel's Pulitzer Prize-winning contemporary masterpiece.

Single show tickets go on sale in August, 2016. Call 216-241-6000 or visit clevelandplayhouse.com for more information.

Between Riverside and Crazy
Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis
April 1-23, 2017 • Outcalt Theatre

Ex-cop Walter "Pops" Washington is NOT one to let things go. NOT the memory of his recently deceased wife. NOT the racially-charged lawsuit he filed years ago against the NYPD. And most definitely NOT the impressive rent-controlled apartment he shares with his parolee son and ragtag surrogate family. But, eviction notices and ultimatums are piling up, and Pops is caught between losing his honor and losing his home. Bringing together the poetic and the profane, this 2015 Pulitzer Prize winner is an exuberant and darkly comic tale of truth, family, and pride.
