The Moral Imperative: Jewish Leadership in the Integration of Shaker Heights (Wed., Feb. 18, 4pm – Free)
The suburb of Shaker Heights was originally planned as a wealthy enclave that excluded racial and religious minorities. But starting in the 1950s and '60s, forward-thinking residents and officials led a movement to consciously integrate the city and its school system, leading to the birth of one of the most diverse cities in the nation. Learn about the role of the Jewish community in this fascinating story with Virginia P. Dawson, PhD, This program is part of the 2014-2015 Cleveland Jewish History and Public Policy Series co-sponsored by Cleveland Jewish News Foundation, The Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University, Teaching Cleveland Digital and Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.

OPERATION FINALE: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichman
February 19 - June 12, 2016
The Nazi responsible for the transport of millions of innocent people to death camps might well have lived out his days in Argentina as "Ricardo Klement" if fate, a Holocaust survivor and Israel's foreign intelligence service hadn't intervened. A multimedia exhibition produced by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in collaboration with The Mossad – Israeli Secret Intelligence Service and Beit Hatfutsot – The Museum of the Jewish People, Tel Aviv, featuring recently declassified artifacts never before seen outside of Israel reveals the secret history behind the capture, extradition and trial of one of the world's most notorious escaped war criminals.

Pharaoh: King of Ancient Egypt
Sun, 03/13/2016 to Sun, 06/12/2016

Pharaoh: King of Ancient Egypt brings 3,000 years of ancient history to life through some of the finest objects from the vast Egyptian holdings of the British Museum, from monumental sculpture to exquisite jewelry, supplemented by key works from the Cleveland collection. While many objects here were created to project a regal image of pharaoh, the story that emerges through this exhibition is also one of a country divided by civil war, conquered by foreign powers, or ruled by competing kings. These ancient rulers themselves were not always male, or even Egyptian, but they shared in the immense challenges of ruling one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever seen.

Requiem and Reflections

7:30 p.m.
Of all the famous requiems, Fauré's Requiem stands out for its serenity and soothing gentleness, always countering dark-hued sonority with perpetual light. Like Fauré, Ravel weaves a delicate statement of memory as tribute to the victims of World War I, extolling not combat but beauty and elegance in the graceful form of a Baroque dance suite. Debussy's La Mer offers a striking parallel as the ocean's unpredictable and ever-changing pattern of swell and retreat mirrors the clear sense of motion of life and death itself.

Civil War Reenactment
Presented by Dick Muny, LCHS Board Member

It's time for our Civil War Reenactment weekend! One of the most popular events we hold on our grounds, watch as we transform 8-acres and 30,000 square feet into the sights, sounds, and feel of the 1860s. Reenactors will showcase period weaponry, medicine, lifestyles, and a few characters you may have missed in your history books. Join us for cannons, musket demonstrations, sutlers, and an immersive living history experience as our greens evolve into a battleground and stage for the issues and people of the War Between the States.

Join us for a fun filled day! Gervasi will be awash in fall colors & Italian flavors for our 4th Annual Grape Harvest Festival! A portion of the proceeds from festival activities and some specialty vendors will be donated to United Way's 2016 annual campaign. Last year, the Swaldo family, vineyard owners and longtime United Way donors added to the festival donation for a total gift of $14,000.

Italian fare will be served in the Villa Grande with a pre-sold Italian Plate. Italian Plates must be reserved online prior to the event. The Piazza, The Bistro and The Crush House will be open full service and other food options will be available, including a walk-up bar available inside The Pavilion some grill options.

A variety of family friendly events are planned as well including: grape stomping at The Crush House, caricatures, yarn bombing (interactive art project), face painting, "grape harvest" relay race for kids, and more! Bocce players are encouraged to join one of the tournaments during the day. Bocce Ball teams are made up of two people and a cash donation will be charged for entry. Participants can sign up the day of the festival, before the tournaments begin. Sign up is first come first serve, with a total of eight teams per tournament. Live music will be performed throughout the day with different bands located at The Villa Grande, The Piazza and a live DJ in the Pavilion with games and dancing. Many activities require cash only for participation; Gervasi does not have an ATM on property. Visit gervasivineyard.com/events for more details regarding the event.

United Way of Greater Stark County believes in creating long-lasting change in three important impact areas of focus: Education, Income & Health. The agency collaborates, convenes, and partners to support programs and initiatives that break the cycle of poverty and promote a healthy community where kids are successful from kindergarten through graduation to a career, and families have the tools, skills, and support they need to become financially independent.
