In partnership with the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology, Hower House Museum explores the invention of the detective through fiction. Learn about how Edgar Allan Poe created the contemporary conventions of mystery writing and about how Arthur Conan Doyle developed those techniques to create Sherlock Holmes. This exhibit explores the minds of the authors as well as the contexts that created the demand and public interest in crime writing.

The highlight of the event will be an awards presentation including the David James Excellent Educator Award (named for and presented to retired Akron Public Schools Superintendent David James), the Kiwanis Community Advocate Award (presented to the LeBron James Family Foundation), and the Student Future Leader Award, presented to Tallmadge Public Schools Student Samantha Blatt).

There is FREE parking available for patrons on the west side of the park which is accessible through the Southern Blvd Entrance. For two nights each October, the trails surrounding The Wilderness Center are filled with the laughter and excitement of families discovering the nocturnal creatures of the Enchanted Forest. This year at the Enchanted Forest, Slug, Bat, Salamander, Opossum, Spider, and Coyote will display their animal super powers. As guests are escorted along the pumpkin-lit trails by volunteer 'fireflies,' these friendly animals will sing songs, tell jokes and share stories of their impressive animal adaptations. Following this 45-minute walk, families can enjoy refreshments. Children and adults are welcome to wear non-scary costumes. This year, TWC will offer evening times on Friday, October 7 (6:30) and Saturday, October 8 (8:30). Tickets will be available for purchase online to TWC members starting September 1st and to the general public on September 8th.

This October is Old-Fashioned Christmas in the Woods' 28th year of hosting attendees from across the country at Shaker Woods in Columbiana, Ohio. More than 200 quality craftspeople and artisans will gather at the festival on October 8-9 and 15-16, 2022. In a manicured, wooded setting, juried costumed crafters will have their booths decorated in an old-fashioned holiday theme. The exhibitors will demonstrate their crafts and sell a wide selection of handmade holiday items, as well as traditional crafts. The level grounds feature gravel footpaths for easy walking and access to acres of free parking. Traditional crafters include candle makers, leatherworkers, woodworkers and doll makers. Hand-thrown pottery and iron and stone work will also be available. Holiday craft items, decorations and handcrafted Christmas ornaments are featured at the festival, in addition to holiday clothing, wreaths and floral arrangements. A delicious selection of food—from made-daily donuts and mouth-watering cobbler to freshly cut french fries and homemade bean soup—is sure to please most appetites.

The Oak Harbor Apple Festival is held each year in downtown Oak Harbor the second full weekend in October. There are over 25,000 annual visitors and all activities are located within a two block walking area. Come see the crowning of our Royalty Court at opening ceremonies Saturday at 9:30am, followed by baby contest, the Grand Parade at 2:00pm, Cornhole tournament, talent show and "The Junk" in the beer tent to round out the day's entertainment. Sunday is chuck full of fun as well, with the Classic Car Show, 5K Run, Kids 1 Mile Fun Run, and local performers to make for a day of pure enjoyment!
